Road Test: 2013 Nissan Juke Nismo

Nissan Juke Nismo 2013_Road Test_02Nissan has finally brought the Nismo brand to Europe, and the first model available with the Nismo-threatment is the Nissan Juke. This small crossover might sound a bit weird choice for a sporty Nismo version, but it is actually pretty fun car to drive. The Nissan Juke Nismo is compact crossover with the length of 4,165 mm and width of 1,770 mm. So Nismo model is 30 mm longer and 5 mm wider than the standard Juke. Compact dimensions mean that it’s not very heavy car. The 2WD car weighs just 1,295 kg and the 4WD version 1,441 kg.

Nissan Juke’s styling is everything but conventional. Therefore it might not be everyone’s favorite. However, especially with the Nismo-upgraded exterior, the Juke Nismo looks quite muscular and sporty. The exterior modifications are not just to improve the looks but the car’s aerodynamics as well. Among the changes are new front and rear bumpers and a new horizontal mesh grille. The integrated fog lights have been replaced by thin-strip LED daytime running lights. The sculpted side skirts have been reworked to enhance aerodynamic performance.

Nismo model can also be recognized from the red coloured door mirrors, red pinstripe around base of the car, piano black B-pillar, tailgate spoiler and 18-inch light-alloy wheels with 225/45 tyres. The Nissan Juke Nismo is available in three exterior colours, Silver Grey, Pearl White and Metallic Black.

The interior provides almost as many details as the exterior. The steering wheel is finished in alcantara and leather with red top marking. The front seats have been redesigned to offer additional lateral support. The sport seats are trimmed in suede and feature a red Nismo logo. The front seats provide excellent lateral support. The tachometer also has a red background and Nismo logo. The standard black rubber pedals have been upgraded to a metallic finish, and there is also a Nismo logo on the footstop.

Nissan Juke Nismo is powered by a 1.6-litre Direct Injection Gasoline Turbocharged (DIG-T) petrol engine. 1.6-litre engine is probably a bit smaller than what you expect to find from a Nismo model. However, with turbocharging the four-cylinder engine produces 200 horsepower and 250 Newton metres of torque. Two version are available, 2WD and 4WD. The 4WD model comes with the CVT automatic transmission and can accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in 8,2 seconds. This 2WD model with a six-speed manual gearbox is a bit faster, and can make the sprint to hundred in 7,8 seconds.

The manual gearbox with close-ratio gearing and the 1.6-litre DIG-T engine make the Juke Nismo feel quite brisk. But you have to give the engine some revs to make the car move. Engine’s top torque is available between 2,400 and 4,800 rpm and the maximum power is delivered at 5,600 rpm. Keep the revs above 2,000 rpm and the Juke gives you quite nice acceleration.

Juke Nismo’s suspension and steering settings have been upgraded to provide better driving dynamics. The Nismo engineers have done a great job as the Juke Nismo is surprisingly enjoyable to drive, even though the car is a front-wheel drive and has quite high ground clearance. The suspension is comfortable, there isn’t too much body roll and the steering is quick and responsive. So it’s almost perfect Juke for the road. You might expect the Nismo version to have even better performance and be more track focused. However, this way the Juke Nismo can attract more owners and spread the Nismo brand to a wider audience.
