The new braking system of the SL 63 AMG

The braking system in the new Mercedes-Benz SL 63 AMG is a new development. Ventilated and perforated brake discs are fitted to both the front and rear axles. Because of the special stresses they face, the front discs feature composite technology that has been tried and tested in motor racing to help offset the temperature peaks more effectively. The front discs, measuring 390 x 36 mm, are decelerated using 6-piston aluminium fixed callipers, while the rear, measuring 360 x 26mm, use single-piston aluminium floating callipers. Grey-painted brake callipers with white AMG lettering are part of the standard equipment.

Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG

The AMG 5.5-litre V8 biturbo engine develops a maximum output of 400 kW (544 hp) and a torque of 760 newton metres. This enables the new G 63 AMG to accelerate from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.4 seconds, with a new top speed of 210 km/h (electronically limited). The new G 63 AMG outperforms the G 55 AMG KOMPRESSOR by 27 kW (37 hp) and 60 newton metres. Its direct predecessor was a clear favourite for G-Class purchasers, with a sales ratio of over 40 percent. The new Mercedes-Benz SL 65 AMG

The SL 65 AMG is the first model to feature the new AMG brand face. The two elements which dominate the form – the radiator grille and the lower cooling air intake – are retained but in reinterpreted form which gives them a more distinctive identity. The central styling feature is the new “twin blade” radiator grille in high-sheen chrome. Also the lower cross strut in the front apron is finished in high-sheen chrome and is given a perceived sense of depth by the gap above it. Road Test: 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS 63 AMG

Although there still is the same 63-badging in the tailgate, this new CLS AMG has a completely new engine. The new powerhouse has eight-cylinders like its predecessor, but otherwise the engine is completely new. Engine’s displacement is just 5.5-litres, or 5461 cubic centimetres to be exact. That is 747cc less than the previous, 6208cc engine. The other major difference is that while the previous 6.2-litre V8 was naturally aspirated, this new V8 is turbocharged. The two exhaust gas turbochargers are located next to the cylinder banks to supply the eight cylinders with fresh air. Under full load, when running at maximum speed of 185 000rpm, the two turbochargers force 1750 kg of air into the combustion chambers per hour.
