Citroen DS made its debut at the 1955 Paris Motor Show on Thursday 6 October. The model’s avant-garde body design set a new benchmark immediately. Some 12,000 DS 19 models were sold that day, but by the end of the Paris Motor Show ten days later, some 80,000 firm orders had been taken.
The BMW 507 was launched to the public in 1955. The beautiful roadster attracted people’s attention the way BMW had hoped for. The long and sleek engine compartment, the cockpit perfectly tailored to the driver and passenger, the short and muscular rear end, stretched side lines and gently sweeping curves gave the car a timeless design.
The road version of the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL was unveiled in February 1954 at the International Motor Sports Show in New York. Series production began in Sindelfingen in August 1954 and the price was fixed at 29,000 Marks – a quite enormous sum at the time, especially when you compared the new model alongside the Mercedes-Benz 170 Vb – on sale at 7,900 Marks.
The two-seater Jaguar SS100 was powered by a 2.5-litre straight-six engine. The engine was based on a Standard Motor Company unit. It was greatly improved by consultant engineer Harry Weslake, who converted it from side to overhead valve operation. The engine produced 100 horsepower, which provided sporty performance for the Jaguar SS100’s lightweight body.
