Road Test: 2013 BMW 316i Sport Line

BMW 3 Series’ entry level model is the 316i. It is powered by a four-cylinder, 1.6-litre petrol engine featuring BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, high precision injection, Valvetronic fully variable valve control and Double-Vanos variable camshaft control. The engine produces 136 horsepower, which might sound a bit modest for the sporty 3 Series Sedan. However, with the twin-scroll turbocharger the engine delivers nice amount of torque from its considerably small displacement of 1598cc. The maximum torque of 220 Newton metres is delivered at 1,350rpm.

Road Test: 2012 BMW M5

It looks much like a BMW 5 Series Sedan, but the new BMW M5 is actually a very different kind of a car. It is a sports car disguised as a friendly looking sedan. For the first time, the BMW M5 is now powered by a turbocharged engine. While the preciding M5 had a 5.0-litre V10, there is now a 4.4-litre V8 under the bonnet. The turbocharging not only improves performance, but also the efficiency of the car.

New BMW X3 xDrive28i

Starting in the spring of 2012, all BMW X3 model variants will be powered by engines equipped with BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology. The latest addition to the drive train portfolio is the 2-litre, four-cylinder 245 hp petrol engine, which gives the BMW X3 xDrive28i even more power and efficiency. The technology package employed in this engine comprises a supercharging system operating according to the Twin Scroll principle, High Precision Injection with direct fuel injection, Valvetronic variable valve control and double Vanos variable camshaft control. This combination guarantees not only spontaneous throttle response and sporty power delivery continuing into the high load range, but also fuel economy that is outstandingly favourable even for a petrol engine of this performance class.

BMW’s new six-cylinder diesel engine with three turbochargers.

The first of the new BMW M Performance Automobiles are powered by a 3.0-litre six-cylinder in-line diesel engine. Fitted in the BMW M550d xDrive, BMW M550d xDrive Touring, BMW X5 M50d and BMW X6 M50d, the 2993cc engine generates maximum output of 280 kW/381 hp. No less imposing is its peak torque of 740 Newton metres (546 lb-ft), all of which the driver will find on tap as low down as 2000rpm. Instantaneous torque development maintained into the upper reaches of the rev range is the hallmark feature of the new unit, underpinned by an array of innovative and unique technical wizardry. For the first time in a BMW, the engine is powered by a trio of turbochargers. Their arrangement and interplay strategy are the key to the engine achieving its exceptionally high efficiency.

Road Test: 2011 BMW X1 xDrive28i

X1 xDrive28i is the first BMW with the new four-cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine. The new engine has a displacement of 1997cc and with the help of BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, high precision injection, double-Vanos and Valvetronic, it delivers 245 horsepower. This kind of power is usually found from the BMW’s engines that have two more cylinders and a much larger displacement. In addition to the horsepower, turbocharging the petrol engine creates a nice mount of torque as well. Hefty 350 Newton metres of torque is available at very low revs at just 1250rpm. This torque at low revs makes the engine very enjoyable to drive, but bringing up the real performance of this engine, it needs more revs. All the 245 horsepower wakes up at 5000rpm and then this engine shows its other side. The new X1 xDrive28i can sprint from zero to hundred kilometres per hour in 6.5 seconds with this automatic transmission. With the six-speed manual gearbox the sprint time is even 0,4 seconds faster.

Road Test: 2011 BMW 650i Convertible

It’s hard to be unnoticed when driving with the BMW’s new 6 Series Convertible. If the previous 6 Series looked good, this new one is astonishing. With the total length of 4894 millimetres, the new Convertible is 74 millimetres longer than its predecessor. The car is also 39 millimetres wider and now measures 1894 millimetres across. At the same time 9 millimetres have been shaved off its height. As the car’s height is only 1365 millimetres, it looks even longer and wider than it actually is. As the car has grown in width and length, the interior is quite spacious, especially in the front. The 6 Series is designed to be a 2+2 seater, so the legroom is surprisingly small in the rear seat considering the car’s wheelbase of 2855 millimetres. Eventhough the car has lost some height, it still provides quite nicely headroom in both front and rear seats, also with the roof on top. The Dakota leather trim is standard, but Nappa leather is available as an option in four colour options. In addition to the seats, the instrument panel, the centre console and the upper sections of the rear door panel and side trim can also be lined with Nappa leather as an option and if you want the interior to look even more special, these interior elements can also be ordered with the stitching in a contrasting colour.

Road Test: 2011 BMW X3 xDrive35i

The 3-litre straight six-cylinder twinturbo petrol engine is one of my favorites in the current BMW engine range. Luckily it is now available for the new X3 also. With BMW TwinPower Turbo technology, direct petrol injection and variable valve control it provides not just a a lot of power but is surprisingly fuel efficient also. The engine generates 306 hp which is available at 5800 rpm. With the help of the turbocharging, the engine provides a lot more torque than what we would get from a naturally aspirated engine. 400 Newton metre of torque is available on a wide engine range between 1200 and 5000 rpm. When you have a lot of torque available, it is possible to drive with surprisingly low revs. The average fuel consumption for xDrive35i in the EU test cycle is 8.8 litres/100 km and CO2 emission level is 204 grams per kilometre. On our test drive this also seemed quite realistic number, although low fuel consumption is probably not the main reason why you choose the xDrive35i. When giving it a bit more throttle, xDrive35i can sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds, while the top speed is 245 km/h.
