2013 Volkswagen Beetle Turbo Convertible

The 2013 Beetle Convertible offers the different powertrain combinations. The sportiest Beetle Convertible is the Turbo version with the 2.0-litre, turbocharged dual-overhead-cam, 16-valve, direct-injection, four-cylinder engine, which makes 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque, delivered from just 1700 rpm.The Turbo is available either with DSG transmission or six-speed manual gearbox. DSG combines the comfort and ease-of-use of an automatic with the responsiveness and economy of a manual. The six-speed, transversely-mounted DSG unit features two wet clutches with hydraulic pressure regulation. One clutch controls the “odd” gears—first, third, fifth and reverse—while the other operates the even gears. Essentially it is two gearboxes in one. With the DSG transmission, the Turbo gets EPA-estimated fuel economy of 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. For the Turbo with the six-speed manual, the figures are 21 mpg city and 30 mpg highway.

The new Volkswagen Beetle Convertible

Volkswagen unveiled the new Beetle Convertible, the third-generation of the iconic VW ragtop. Like its predecessors, the type 15 from 1949 and the 2003 New Beetle Convertible, the convertible offers combination of practicality and fun for four. In creating the latest version of the Beetle Convertible, Volkswagen has reinterpreted the Beetle Convertible’s timeless design with a sportier and more dynamic silhouette, just as it did with the latest Beetle coupe. The combination of a flatter roofline and a more upright windshield gives the car a shape that’s more closely aligned with the first generation of Beetle convertibles.

Seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf unveiled

Volkswagen unveiled the new, seventh-generation Golf. The latest Golf is up to 220 pounds lighter than the outgoing car, thanks to careful focus on weight savings in all aspects of the car’s construction, from the electrical architecture through to the engines and the body-in-white. The air conditioning unit is, for example, six pounds lighter than the old car’s; the seats have shed 15 pounds; and the body-in-white is 51 pounds lighter. One major reason for the bodyshell’s weight loss is the extensive use of high- and ultra-high strength steels. The share of the high-strength steels overall has gone from 66 percent in the previous Golf to 80 percent in the new one. Of this, the share of ultra-high-strength steel has gone from six to 28 percent. One benefit of lowering the Golf’s weight is better fuel economy: the 1.4 TSI that uses a 140-horsepower, turbocharged, 1.4-liter engine fitted with cylinder de-activation gets a European Cycle combined fuel consumption figure of 49 mpg, while the base 105-horsepower TDI Clean Diesel engine delivers 62 mpg on the EC combined cycle.
