Mercedes-Benz 500 E made its first appearance at the Paris motor show in October 1990. This powerhouse of the 124 Series had surprisingly modest appearance. Only the somewhat more voluminous wings, the slightly lower body and a modified front apron with inset fog lamps differentiate it from the other models in the 124 series.
At the 1987 Geneva Motor Show Mercedes-Benz presented the Coupes of the 124 series. Models 230 CE and 300 CE were the first to debut. In autumn 1989 the 300 CE-24 was added as new flagship model. One year later it was joined by the 200 CE, which was intended solely for export to Italy. The year 1992 saw the arrival of the 200 CE, 220 CE and 320 CE with up-to-date four-valve-per-cylinder engines. In 1993 the powerful E 36 AMG Coupe marked the brilliant climax of the series in regard to output.
In September 1991, as a further body variant of the 124 series Mercedes-Benz presented the 300 CE-24 Cabriolet. Production began in 1992. Cabriolet development was based on the Coupé, and in terms of mechanical components the Cabriolets were identical with their four-door counterparts. Like the Saloons they were equipped with multi-link independent rear suspension, thereby further improving ride quality compared with predecessor models, as well as shock absorber strut independent front suspension located by individual wishbones. The braking system was also borrowed without modification from the Saloons.
