Infiniti production in Europe is moving even closer after approval was given to build a major new extension to the record-breaking production facility in Sunderland. This new production area, designed to manufacture the first ever Infiniti built in Europe, will cover approximately 270,000 square-feet (25,000m²) and will house specialist equipment in the body and final assembly areas of the production line. This extension forms part of the previously announced $388 million (£250m) investment by Infiniti, which will create over 1,000 new jobs in the UK automotive industry.
Infiniti announced that a revised line-up of the Infiniti G37 sedan models will continue to be available in the United States through model year 2015 alongside the all-new Infiniti Q50. Two models of the Infiniti G37 Sedan will continue to be produced, the G37 Sedan Journey and G37 Sedan AWD. Only two options will be available, the Premium and Navigation Packages.
The 2014 Infiniti QX60 Hybrid (formerly the Infiniti JX35) adds a second powertrain choice for buyers of Infiniti’s popular premium crossover vehicle. Along with the Q70 Hybrid and previously announced Q50 Hybrid, Infiniti will have a trio of advanced Direct Response Hybrids for the 2014 model year. The new Infiniti QX60 Hybrid is projected to realize 26 miles per gallon fuel economy (combined city/highway driving) – a 24 percent increase over non-hybrid QX60 models. Most significantly, it does so with absolutely no compromise of performance, interior roominess or cargo space compared to standard QX60 models.
Infiniti introduces the new vehicle nomenclature for the 2014 model year. The new Q/QX naming sets a clear hierarchy of vehicle type and positioning, while also giving a nod to the original Infiniti performance luxury flagship, the Q45. For 2014, Infiniti sedans, coupes and convertibles bear the Q badging, with SUVs and crossovers designated as QX. The numeric designations distinguish each model’s place in the overall lineup.
The Q50 features distinctive design, engaging performance, world’s first technologies and unmatched levels of connectivity and personalization. It is offered in 3.7-liter V6 and 3.5-liter Hybrid models. The Q50 Hybrid features one of the fastest accelerating hybrid engines and, at 36-mpg highway, one of the most fuel-efficient powertrains in the segment. Both Q50 3.7-liter and Q50 3.5-liter Hybrid models are available with a choice of rear-wheel drive or Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and in a range of well-equipped models, including versions with special sport appearance and performance features with sport brakes and sport suspension tuning.
Infiniti has opened its first showroom in Hong Kong. Situated in the heart of Hong Kong’s commercial district, the showroom, called Infiniti Gallery, is located at G/F Hutchison House, 10 Harcourt Road, Central, Hong Kong. The all-new 2014 Infiniti Q50 is designed to create a new, distinct level of customer engagement when it launches in the North American market in summer 2013. While Infiniti sports sedans have always been noted for their outstanding proportions and presence, the new Infiniti Q50 adds a new dimension of premium style. Signature Infiniti exterior design features include the “double arch” grille, dynamic arch roofline and Crescent-cut C-pillar. The front end is decidedly aggressive, with a sport front fascia offered on the Q50 sport models. The new grille’s three-dimensional, textural quality is provided by elaborate detailing of the waved mesh pattern surface and chrome surround, while the distinctive LED headlights and marker lights’ sharp lines suggest an almost human look.
The new Q50 features available Infiniti Direct Adaptive Steering technology, a world’s first production vehicle design. The system allows independent control of the Q50’s tire angle and steering inputs, transmitting the driver’s intentions to the wheels faster than a mechanical system. This increases the direct driving performance feel by quickly and intelligently communicating road surface feedback to the driver. Four different steering settings are offered, allowing customization by driver preference or road conditions. This world’s first technology provides the flexibility for the driver to change both steering effort and the steering gear ratio. A backup mechanical steering system is provided with models utilizing the new Direct Adaptive Steering technology.
The Infiniti Q50’s interior is designed as an invitation to drive. Special attention was paid to the driver position, offering a generous range of customizable adjustments within a cosseting yet comfortable cockpit. The front and rear seats are a new ergonomic design, developed to help distribute body pressure across a wider range of the upper seating surface. When sitting, the pressure load on the backbone is about 1.4 times greater than while standing. The bending moments that become a factor of load are reduced by the new seat design, with the additional support for the pelvis and the self-weight of the chest.
