The 208 GTi has arrived to spice up the Peugeot 208 lineup. The compact, lightweight body of the Peugeot 208 provides an excellent starting point for the sporty GTi. Compared to the preceding Peugeot 207, the 208 is about 90 kilograms lighter. Although well equipped, the weight of the new Peugeot 208 GTi is just 1160 kilograms. This improves car’s driving dynamics and fuel efficiency, and also makes it possible to achieve good performance without massive sized engine.
Peugeot has taken a new approach to the hybrid technology with their 3008 HYbrid4 model. Unlike most of the hybrid vehicles which are petrol-engined, the 3008 HYbrid4 combines electric motor with a diesel engine. Well actually the diesel engine and the electric motor are not combined, as the HDi diesel sits at the front of the car, while the electric motor is located at the back. There are now mechanical links between the front and the rear drivetrains. Everything is controlled electronically between these two drivetrains.
It’s always interesting to test drive a new 200 series Peugeot. After the successful 207, it’s now time for the Peugeot 208. The new 208 makes a little exception what comes to the new cars as this new model is actually a bit smaller than its predecessor. Due to the shorter overhangs front and rear, 208 is 70mm shorter than the 207. Designers have also cut slices from its width (-20mm) and height (-10mm). The Peugeot 208 is also considerably lighter. Basic model’s kerb weight is just 975 kg. This diesel engined model weighs 1090 kilograms.
